Juicing--one of nature's most powerful cocktails--is a fast, delicious, and inexpensive way to get your daily nutritional needs down the hatch in five minutes or less.

Over the years, health experts have trumpeted the power of juicing. Doctors stress the importance of including at least 5-8 fruits and vegetables daily as part of a healthy diet, and for most people, it’s hard to imagine how this many veggies could be consumed in a day. It’s no wonder—the Standard American Diet’s focus on meat, dairy and processed foods seems to leave little room for anything else.

Many people make the shift to healthier eating by drinking a fresh juice of carrots, beets, apples, parsley or kale first thing in the morning. When raw fruits and vegetables are juiced, the body immediately responds by rapidly absorbing the vital enzymes and micronutrients that are destroyed during the cooking process. Fans of juicing report that drinking fresh juice is often followed by a surge in energy and vitality, and health advocates herald fresh juice’s anti-aging properties.

The Raw Family

One family is a living example of the amazing power of juice. In 1994, the Boutenko family (often referred to as the “Raw Family”), realized that each member of the family was suffering from some kind of disease or ailment. Victoria Boutenko's children were diagnosed with juvenile diabetes and asthma, her husband Igor had rheumatoid arthritis and hyperthyroidism, and she was depressed and obese.

Determined to find a solution, Victoria Boutenko began to do research into the possible causes of her family’s illnesses. After extensive research, she learned about live food diets and the health benefits of juicing. She began adding fresh green juices to her family’s diet, and in a short time, many of their symptoms began to disappear. She made the decision to put her family on a 100% raw food diet of fresh juices, live fruits and vegetables, and raw nuts and seeds.

Later, Victoria came to the conclusion that it was more beneficial to include the fiber and essential nutrients found in whole vegetables and fruit, and now puts her juices in a high-powered blender rather than running them through a juicer. Today, the Boutenko Family is living disease-free, and the family members—including the children—are now considered some of the leading experts in the live food movement.

Equipment

The wonderful thing about juicing the Boutenko way is that there’s no need to invest in an expensive juicer, which can be a heavy-duty time sucker when it comes to clean-up. A simple blender is all you’ll need, although many juicing advocates will invest in a Vitamix, a high-powered blender that pulverizes fruits, vegetables and nuts into submission in seconds.

Easy Green Smoothie

Start every day with a green smoothie, and you’ll never need coffee. Make an entire quart and drink from it throughout the day.

Ingredients

  • 3-5 large leaves kale, or
  • 1-2 cups of spinach, or
  • 1-2 cups of beet greens
  • 1 banana, apple, or pear
  • 1-2 cups of water

Directions:

Remove the soft outer leaves of the kale by “peeling” the green leaves away from the inner stem. Place in blender. Peel banana or core apple or pear, place in blender. Add more/less water, depending on desired consistency. Blend well.

Optional

  • To sweeten without fruit sugar (recommended for diabetics), add 2-4 leaves of fresh Stevia or Stevia powder
  • To intensify, add green powder like Alissa Cohen’s Wildcrafted Green Powder

Tange-tini

Recipe by Helena Baronheid, Viva Institute

Forget PMS, ladies…this tangy treat is a phenomenal de-bloater. Celery’s natural diuretic properties, when combined with sweet tangerine juice, are a delicious way to slim down and power up.

Ingredients

  • 4 whole celery stalks, chopped into 2-4 inch pieces
  • 2-4 whole ripe tangerines (not necessary to remove the pits when using a Vitamix)
  • 1-2 cups of water

Directions

Blend well, pour, and enjoy. Use a martini glass and call it a night.

No-Guilt Fruit Smoothie

When you think you’re “being good” by opting for a fruit smoothie instead of ice cream, guess again. Most commercially made smoothies found in stores pack a whopping 600 calories because they’re made with powdered sweetener, frozen sweetened yogurt, or even ice cream. Opt for a total fruit smoothie instead, and you’ll learn to prefer the real thing.

Ingredients

  • 1 banana, peeled
  • ½ cup strawberries
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • 1-2 cups water

Directions

Add more/less water, depending on desired consitency. Blend well and enjoy.
